Dublin is one of the most popular cities in Europe at the moment and more and more people are visiting and moving here each year. Accordingly, rents are exploding and it might be difficult for new Dubliners to find a place to live which is nice and affordable at the same time! But do not give up - as long as you are a little flexible and patient, you will definitely find a great accommodation!
1. Be ready to share
Dublin is a big city, yet there is not much room in it! It has very few high rise buildings, which adds to its charm, but also makes it quite difficult to find enough room for all the people! This means that if you do find a place, it is very unlikely that you will have it to yourself. It is very common to share apartments in Dublin, not only for students but also for professionals! Apart from the obvious advantage of saving money, it is also a great way to find new friends and get to know people from all over the world. It was not a big change for me, since I have always lived in shared apartments in Germany, but it might be a new situation for some of you. If you do need your own apartment, you might have to move a little out of the city center!
2. Go to a lot of viewings
People are fighting over rooms in Dublin. Unfortunately, there are some people who take advantage of your desperate situation and try to scam you! To avoid any unwanted surprises, you should go to as many apartment and house viewings as possible. It is a great opportunity for you to check out if the apartments are actually as big and clean as in the ad and to get to know your future flatmates and landlords! You might apply for a lot of rooms and will probably get some rejections as well, so be prepared and have some backup plans!
3. Get a room for the first few days
In order to be able to go to viewings, it is best to book an apartment or a room for your first few days. I booked an Airbnb and went to viewings during my first week. This way, you have a relaxed start and do not have to worry about where to sleep during your first week! When renting rooms in Dublin, people do not do it a month or two in advance (which was what I was used to from Germany) but sometimes only a couple of days in advance. When you are located in Dublin already, it is much easier for you to go and check out the places!
4. Look on different platforms
There are many different ways of finding a room in Dublin. I found mine via facebook! You can just create a post and state where you want to live, how much you are able to spend and for how long you want to rent the room and people might approach you with their offers. Other then that, there are several platforms which you can use to find a place, like for example WG-gesucht (german), easyroommate or daft!
5. Don`t give up!
Finding an apartment can be frustrating.. Everyone I know was super nervous when they were new in Dublin and started looking for accommodation! But I promise you, it is not impossible - even though my article might have made it sound that way. Everyone I know has found something in the end! If you are active and a little flexible, you will surely find something as well. Once you have found a room and can finally settle in, all the stress will be forgotten and you will be able to start your Dublin adventure. It is worth it!
