Basically, anyone who works in Ireland is covered by a public basic health insurance.

In addition, anybody who is resident in Ireland, has the chance to insure themselves over a private health insurance like VHI or Quinn Direct. You will get benefits such as faster stationary medical treatment.

Before you negotiate a contract for a private health insurance, you should ask yourself what you want to insist on like travel insurance or certain hospitalization.

Nice to know: You can change the insurance at any time, without fines! A great comparison of different health insurances can be found on the Health Insurance Authority page: https://www.hia.ie/consumer-information/selecting-a-health-insurance-plan.

If you live and work in Dublin or Ireland just for a short time only like myself, you can get an additional insurance from a foreign health insurance. There is also the possibility of insuring yourself for a longer period of time with a health insurance from i.e. DKV. This is uncomplicated and less expensive than obtaining insurance directly in Ireland.

What are your experiences with health insurance in Ireland? Have you ever had to visit a doctor here?
