Room hunting in Dublin - English

The housing situation here in Dublin is very difficult. Many people want to move here and accordingly, the rental rates are extremely high. I noticed this when I started looking for a room after I got the confirmation for my internship.

A room? Yes, you cannot afford anything else here. You really have to earn very well to have an own apartment, which is central. Lots of people also share a room, but that was out of question for me.

I started searching on Google. There I searched for terms such as “WG in Dublin” or “shared apartment in Dublin”. Well-known sites such as http://www.wg-gesucht.de , www.rent.ie or http://www.daft.ie were directly suggested to me. I was told that I should look for a room on these sites, but I should take care of scammers. There should be a lot of scams here so you should take care.

I also noticed that everything happens very fast here. The ads are being released on one day and they are looking for a new tenant for next week. For me it was all a bit too uncertain, because I wanted to get a confirmation for a room before moving to Dublin. This phenomenon can be seen especially in Facebook groups like “Dublin Rooms, Flats & Roommates”. I tried it once, but gave up directly. Some are successful there, but in my opinion, it makes more sense when you look in those Facebook groups when you are actually here and able to spontaneously visit the rooms.

So, I started writing a lot of messages to landlords on daft.ie, but I did not get any answer. Just one nice man, who owns a house and still had a room available during my time, replied to me. My colleague looked at the room for me and it was all right, I even got the confirmation for the room. Unfortunately, the distance was bothering me: Google Maps indicated that it is only about 50 minutes away by bus, but that means in real life that you can expect to be at least 1 ½ hours in the bus. Sadly, not much of the day remains over for yourself.

My mother found an ad on wg-gesucht.de and forwarded it to me. The house is central, only 20 minutes by feet to work. I absolutely wanted this room and ended up getting it. Now I live in a house with three other German girls and I can say I was really lucky 😊 The house could not have had a better location.

Many who I met have lived in a hostel for a long time and then looked locally around here. Others live in a more expensive apartment from Airbnb. It is up to you where you want to live, but I can say, it is not impossible to get a room here in Dublin.
